What do we mean by the terms Sensitive, Sensitised or Dehydrated skin?

Sensitive

Clinically speaking, sensitive skin describes a predisposition you're born with. The protective outer layer is easily compromised, has difficulty blocking irritants, microbes, and allergens causing reactions such as flushing and allergies.

A sensitive skin tends to be thinner, making capillaries more visible and skin imperfections more obvious.

Sensitive skins tend to produce less sebum, leading to dehydration, dullness, tightness, redness, blotchiness and flaky skin.

Sensitised

An irritated skin caused by environmental, systemic issues or lifestyle. Triggers can be pollution, temperature, products placed on the skin, hormones, STRESS (big cause), rashes caused by illness breaking out onto the skin.

Trauma caused by laser treatments, peels, sun damage, excess exfoliation.

A sensitised skin may have rosacea, eczema or psoriasis.

Dehydration

Skin that is chronically dehydrated can lead to redness, untreated redness can lead to irritation, creating a  sensitive or may lead to a sensitised skin. It is a vicious cycle. One can lead to the other and lead to another when it goes untreated.

In my 20 years experience, I've seen many chronically dehydrated skins. I would say that for someone who wants to keep their skin in tip top condition, Hydration is the most important factor.

A POORLY HYDRATED SKIN MAKES OTHER SKIN ISSUES LOOK MUCH WORSE.

Triggers or What can you do to help your skin?

Using skin temperature water on the face is good, NOT allowing yourself to get overheated for prolonged periods helps.

Excessive intake of alcoholic beverages, caffeine and certain medications can trigger dry, sensitive skin. For some people, even dairy products are a trigger!

Also – don’t smoke. Smoking drains your skin of vitamins A and C and constricts blood vessels. It’s like suffocating your skin from the inside. Smoking also dehydrates skin around the lip area, causing wrinkles.

Sometimes its as simple as moving from anti-ageing or anti-acne product ranges to products which hydrate and nourish the skin, usually considered 'sensitive', 'soothing' OR 'calming' ranges.

Simply going from outdoors when it is cold and dry to indoors where it is warm and dry affects many skins.
